Gary Lee McHenry, 81, of Waveland passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021.

He was born Sept. 7, 1940, at Middlebourne, West Virginia, to the late Glen and Inez (Thomas) McHenry. He married Nancy (Carey) Keiser in July of 1960 and had four children. She survives.

Gary graduated from high school and then serve in the United Stated Army from 1959-1965. He began working for Eli Lilly as an electrician in 1961 and while there began his law enforcement career in 1980. He was a reserve officer for Crawfordsville until he retired from Eli Lilly in 1993. Gary became a Montgomery County jail officer and county reserve. Later became a security officer at the courthouse. In the late 1990’s Gary attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and started his second career in law enforcement. He was the town marshal for Waynetown then returned to the sheriff’s department in 2009, he became town marshal off Waveland where he was currently serving.

In his spare time, Gary loved deer hunting, fishing and bird watching. He was dedicated to his community where his door and heart were always open to everyone. Gary had a kind, quiet nature, respectful to everyone and made them feel important. His smile, kind humor and the twinkle in his eyes will be missed by many.

Gary is survived by his significant other, Tana Storm; his children, Teresa Mitchelson (Patrick Busch) and Matthew (Amy) McHenry; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces; and brother Bobby (Darlene) McHenry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jeffrey McHenry and Gregory McHenry; two grandsons, Benjamin McHenry and Jarrod McHenry; and son-in-law John Mitchelson.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28 at Machledt & Servies Funeral Home, 301 E. Green St., Waveland, with Pastor Mark Roberts officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
