Get to know your neighbors at First Friday event

Crawfordsville’s celebration of Independence Day will carry over to Friday with First Friday activities planned downtown.

It starts with dinner options in the early evening before the First Friday concert and ends with an “after party” with live music at Backstep Brewing Company.

“We have several downtown businesses that are participating in the First Friday experience,” Crawfordsville Main Street Program Manager Sue Lucas said. “There’s several businesses doing specials or events in tandem with the First Friday concert. But, of course, you can go to any of the downtown restaurants and tell them that it’s to-go and bring it down to the plaza to enjoy.”

Green Street between Market and Main streets will be closed throughout the evening. A shaded dining area will be set up on Green Street beginning a 6 p.m. and guitarist Michael Kelsey will begin performing around the Marie Canine Plaza fountain at 7 p.m.

Three downtown restaurants are offering carry-out specials. Four Seasons will have fresh grilled “Grab-N-Go” dinners and are featuring Hooker Corner Indiana winery. Barefoot Burger is serving its signature All-American burger and fries. And China Inn will have chicken carnitas tacos with crab rangoon and iced horchata or strawberry lemonade.

Food and drinks available on Green Street includes Fat Bottom Donuts, Sheepdog Coffee Company and a fresh cotton candy served by a Boy Scout troop along with free popcorn from Crawfordsville Main Street. Backstep will have Norvells BBQ on the north end of Green Street.

All food and drink options will be serving by 6 p.m. and Backstep’s beer garden is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Along with family games, there will by chalk art by Athens Art Gallery artists and Josie Beach of Polka Pop Balloon Stop will provide her signature style of entertainment.

Following Kelsey’s performance on the plaza, Regular Joe’s will perform at Backstep.

“Our downtown is your neighborhood. It’s everyone’s neighborhood,” Lucas said. “So when we call this a neighborhood party, that’s what it is. So come to your neighborhood and enjoy all the things that your neighbors have to offer, and get to know your downtown, and have a great time.”
