GIRLS BASKETBALL: Shorthanded Athenians fall to Tiger Cubs

Posted

GREENCASTLE — A shorthanded Crawfordsville girls’ basketball team dropped a non-conference road game to Greencastle 60-23 on Tuesday night.

The Athenians were without several players, including their top rebounder and floor general Shea Williamson.

The Tiger Cubs offense got to the Athenians early and often. Greencastle led 12-2 after a quarter and 26-14 at halftime. A 22-2 edge for the Tiger Cubs in the third quarter blew things wide open.

“Yeah they make it tough,” Crawfordsville coach Tyler Smith said. “We really like when we have Williamson down low to kind of be the safety down there. We didn’t have that so we switched it up to either a 3-2 or 23 (zone defense) and a lot of times we were just too slow.”

Greencastle connected on 27-of-57 shots and held Crawfordsville to a 7-of-28 performance. Sydney Doan led the Tiger Cubs with 16 points, while Kennedy Trigg added 15 and Anne Zellers 10.

Crawfordsville turned it over 23 times.

“We’ve got to find a way,” Smith said. “We are going to be shorthanded and a lot of teams will be throughout the season, so you’ve got to play with what you’ve got and have to find a way to take care of it.”

Liddy McCarty, a lone bright spot for the Athenians, led the way with nine points.

“She got to the line some and was looking to attack,” Smith added. “We feel especially when we are in a situation where offense is clicking, she becomes even more dangerous.”

Olivia Reed added seven.

Crawfordsville plays at Sagamore Conference foe Danville on Friday afternoon.
