GIRLS GOLF PREVIEW: Young Athenians welcome new players

Posted

Crawfordsville girls’ golf enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in program history in 2020.

Led by senior Bailey Mittal, the Athenians won the county and qualified for the regional.

However, this season the Athenians are staring at a rebuild with just two returning players from last season in junior Sadie Walker and sophomore Carli Payne.

Crawfordsville has added junior McKenzie Wilson, who played as a freshman, and Christen Saunders and Nancy Blanchard, who are both picking up golf for the first time.

“I hope the girls enjoy their golfing experience and have fun, work to improve a little bit each day, and learn the basics of golf,” Crawfordsville coach Tony Thomas said about the Athenians’ approach to the season. “Success is doing the best you can, with what you have, where you are to God’s glory. Kids involve themselves in athletics for a variety of reasons and golf is one of those sports that you can do for the rest of your life.”

Thomas hopes to see his young and inexperienced team improve from the beginning of the season to the end.

“I expect our girls to compete and maintain their composure, to honor the values of the game of golf, to be respectful of each other and the competition, and to enjoy the success of golf golf whether that’s our team or the competition,” he said. “This group did a great job over the summer of getting together, working on the range, playing a few holes, and being together. Our team score hasn’t reflected that as yet, but it’s early. My aspirations are for them to get better.”
