GIRLS SOCCER: Chargers squeak by Bison, darkness

Posted

LINDEN — North Montgomery needed Sidney Campbell to be at her best on Wednesday night, and the senior delivered.

Twice the Chargers’ all-time leading goal scorer answered Benton Central goals to tie the game in the first half with goals of her own.

“Sidney took it to the level that I know she is capable of today,” North Montgomery coach Julie Hodges said. “and I actually challenged her before the game.”

Nina Gable added a goal on a penalty kick just before the half and the Chargers held on defensively in a shortened second half due to darkness to claim a 3-2 win.

Adrien Senesac gave the Bison (2-2-1) a lead just eight minutes into the game, before Campbell responded at the 15 minute mark. Tressa Senesac gave the lead back to Benton Central with 17 minutes left in the first half, but Campbell responded within the minute to tie it at 2-2.

“I don’t know what it is about this team, but this is the third game in a row where we’ve given up an early one and it lights a fire under us,” Hodges added.

For the third game in a row the Chargers (5-1) fell behind only to come back and defeat an opponent they lost to in 2019.

After allowing the pair of early goals, Sydnee Turner delivered a game-winning performance in the net for the Chargers to earn their game ball.

“That was her best game in goal,” Hodges said. “You look at the two goals they scored. Two almost impossible goals to save and then she comes out and we weren’t still playing great defensively and she saved every single one after that.”

The junior goalkeeper had nine saves. Lydia Dugard and Gracen Schwabe each had an assist.

North Montgomery host North Putnam tonight.
