Southmont's Lexie Odum scored the lone Mounties' goal in the 1-0 win over Centerville in the regional semifinal on Saturday.
INDIANAPOLIS — Southmont’s girls soccer team was finally able to get over the hump and advance to the regional final after two straight seasons of losing in the first game, but still fell short in the championship, losing 2-0 to Park Tudor.
In the opening game, the Mounties used an early second half goal by Lexie Odum to down Centerville, and advance to the regional final for the first time in program history.
“They were a great team, and a big challenge for us today,” first-year coach Phil Keller said. “And I’m just happy we got the win. We were able to do some great things that got us to the final.”
The Bulldogs (10-6) entered the regional on an eight-game winning streak, where they had only allowed six goals, but the Mounties (10-7-2) stuck to their game plan, and it paid off.
“We saw a lot of great teamwork out there, and a lot of great passing,” Keller said.
Southmont fired nine first-half shots, including four on-goal, while Centerville managed just a few shots the entire half. After Odum gave the Mounties the lead, Southmont continued to possess the ball and play keep away from the Bulldogs.
In the championship, the Mounties ran into a Panther team that with the win, improved to 20-2 on the season. Park Tudor picked up goals in each half to shutout the Mounties and advance to the semi-state.
