GIRLS SOCCER: Mounties edge Wildcats to move to sectional final

Posted

CLAYTON — For a fourth-straight season the Southmont girls soccer team will play for an IHSAA Class A Sectional title.

The Mounties defeated South Vermillion 2-0 on Thursday night and will face Cascade in the sectional final at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Jordan Stanley scored a goal on an assist from Hanna Nichols at the 16 minute mark in the first half, while Lillie Odum made it 2-0 just before the break. The win for the Mounties over the Wildcats is the second in the last eight days.

“Being humble,” second-year Southmont coach Phil Keller said of the game plan. “We couldn’t come in with big egos, we couldn’t think we already had it in the bag, because anything can happen. We had to play hard and earn the win and I think we did that tonight.”

The Wildcats, who end the season at 1-7-1, were only able to manage a handful of shots on goal, giving Southmont goalie Belle Miller a clean sheet.

Cascade beat Monrovia 2-0 in the second semifinal to improve to 9-5-2 on the season, which includes a 2-0 win over the Mounties. The two teams will meet back at Cascade on Saturday with a fourth-straight title on the line for Southmont. The 3-7-1 Mounties have all the experience chips heading into Saturday’s final.

“We have to play hard and show a desire to win and fight every second for that title,” Keller said. “Experience is something we are very strong in right now and something that moving forward especially into Saturday is definitely going to help us a lot.”
