GIRLS TENNIS PREVIEW: Mustangs return two top players

The Fountain Central girls’ tennis team returns just two varsity players from its 2019 team, but they’re two of their top players from that season.

Junior Lillie Fishero returns at No. 1 singles, while senior Paige Scheurich returns after playing No. 1 doubles as a sophomore in 2019.

“We will certainly look to both players to help lead our team and make us successful,” Fountain Central coach David Kight said. “Even though we have a small number of players and some have not had a lot of experience, they are all experienced in our program and know our drills and what Coach Webb and I expect. I think that makes things much easier for us and allows us to really focus on skill building.”

Fountain Central will lack depth with only seven players. Senior Tyler Bowling, juniors Angela Gonzalez and Emily Jiminez, sophomore Marylee Muniz and freshman Haley Webb will round out the Mustangs’ lineup.

“The biggest weakness I see at this time is depth,” Kight said. “We won’t have the depth that we usually have from a numbers standpoint. We want to improve every day and control the two things we can control — our attitude and our effort and make sure both of those are always good to great.”

Fountain Central opens the season on April 12 at home against Covington.
