GOP set to fill council vacancy

Hunt only eligible candidate to file for caucus

Republicans are set to fill the vacancy on the Montgomery County Council.

Former coroner David Hunt, who is running for an at-large seat on the council this fall, was the only eligible candidate to file for tomorrow’s caucus by Friday’s deadline. Hunt will serve out the term of the late councilman Terry Hockersmith, who died Aug 6.

Hockersmith’s term was set to expire at the end of the year.

Party members will gather to formally select Hunt in a process set forth by state law. A representative from all 27 Republican precincts will take a vote. The caucus is closed to the public.

Hunt will take his seat as the council begins debating the 2021 budget. County department heads are set to present their wish lists to council members at public meetings on Sept. 23 and 24.

That’s followed by a vote to adopt the budget in October.

Hunt previously told the Journal Review that his experience as an elected official made him a good fit for helping decide on the budget.
