Gophers blowout Mustangs in opener

VEEDERSBURG — Things didn’t go well for the Fountain Central girls basketball team in a 65-16 season-opening loss to Clinton Prairie Thursday.

Things went very well for former Mustangs coach Amie Anthrop, who is in her second season at Clinton Prairie.

“It was surreal,” she said. “It was the first time since I was coach here that I have come back to coach a team. I walked in those doors, and recognized that all those girls who I coached in seventh grade here have all grown up. It all started here (at Fountain Central) for me, and I will always appreciate the opportunity they gave me.”

Anthrop coached the Mustangs from 2012-15 and then was coach at Lafayette Harrison for two seasons before heading back to her home base, where she is fourth all-time in the scoring column and returns the nucleus of an 18-6 team from last year.

The Lady Gophers came out and pressed FC from the start, and the turnovers turned into points.

The pressure and the turnovers took away all the Mustangs’ offense, and they fell behind from the start.

“You can always play defense,” Anthrop noted. “We put a new press in this season, and while we started a little slow with it, we got our defensive intensity going and the pressure led to turnovers, which led to points.”

CP had two players in double figures. Katie Blacker had 12 and Tynlie Neal had 11. They were 22-of-54 from the field, 6-of-22 from long range and 15-of-25 from the line. They forced 40 FC turnovers that became 42 points.

The Mustangs were led by Dakota Borman with five points, followed by Jerzi Hershberger and Gracie Foxworthy with four each. Borman had a game-high eight rebounds. The home team was 5-of-20 from the field, 6-of-21 from the line and had 33 rebounds.

The Lady Gophers, 1-0, travel to Covington Saturday. The Mustangs have a Saturday night home game against Frankfort.
