Gordon L. “My Way” Farley was born in Bal Hinch to Howard and Lora Keller Farley on July 11, 1936. He attended seven schools in 12 years and graduated from Dover High School in 1954.
Gordon retired from RR Donnelley & Sons Company in 1996 after 41 years of service. He was known for the nicknames that he gave to his co-workers; some were appreciated, some were not.
He was an avid race fan, having attended every Indianapolis 500 Race since 1962 and never missed a NASCAR Brickyard 400 race. He began working at the Speedway as a Yellow Shirt in 2004 and was promoted to Captain in 2016. He continued working in that position until 2013.
Gordon married Delores Thomas-Reynolds on Aug. 17, 1985. She passed away Aug. 8, 2024. They enjoyed being snowbirds for 24 years, having homes in North Ft. Myers and later in Leesburg. They enjoyed square dancing and were members of Sugar Creek Squares. They also sponsored a sprint car and spent many Saturday nights at the dirt track in Putnamville.
They attended New Market Christian Church and were former members of New Life Baptist Church in Leesburg, Florida.
Gordon was the father of five children from two previous marriages. They are Twila, Terri (Don) Sparrow, Thomas, Trent and Scott.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; infant son Thomas; and daughter Twila. Also preceding him were sister Mildred (Harold) Nichols and brothers, Leslie (Deani), Austin (Ilene) and Wayne “Red” (Marcia).
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at Weir Family Cemetery near Bal Hinch with Pastor Tony Thomas officiating. Burkhart Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
