Guthrie named Assistant Principal of the Year

LINDEN — Jonathan Guthrie continues to make his presence felt for the Chargers.

Named the Indiana Association of School Principals’ assistant principal of the year for District IV in June, Guthrie earned the title once again on Nov. 22.

But this time he was named Assistant Principal of the Year for the entire Hoosier state.

“It’s been very surreal, especially during a time like this when I know everybody in the education world is working their tails off to try to keep things running,” Guthrie said. “It’s just a testament to the school corporation and what great leadership we have and how hard our teachers and our whole staff works at serving our kids.”

Guthrie was officially honored during a ceremony Nov. 22 at the IASP’s Fall Professional’s Conference at the J.W. Marriott hotel in Indianapolis alongside wife Becky Guthrie.

“For an award like this to be possible, it requires a lot of time spent [at the school], which is a lot of time not spent at home,” Guthrie said. “That is only made possible by the fact that she has the ability to basically be a single mom, and she does an amazing job. That allows me to be selfish with my time and focus on the school community.

“It’s only by her grace that I have the ability to do that.”

One assistant principal is honored for each of the IASP’s 12 districts each year. Guthrie, who was selected from those 12, can now move on to the National Association of School Principals’ award.

“That’s quite something, to have the assistant principal of the year,” North Montgomery Superintendent Dr. Colleen Moran said. “He truly is deserving. He has done a lot with neuroscience in the state — taught and trained a lot of principals — and [North Montgomery Principal Michael Cox] has too. It was great to have both of them honored at the district level and then have one reach the state level.”

Ever the student, Guthrie said he plans to continue improving because there is no finish line.

“There’s no destination,” he said. “It’s just continuing the journey and determining what the next steps are.”
