The angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph to assure him of what God was doing, but while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream saying, “Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary as thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins,” (Matthew 1:20-21).
Dr. G. Campbell Morgan was a British evangelist, a prolific author, and leading Bible teacher of his day, said of Christmas: “Here is the ancient of days becoming a babe in Bethlehem. Here is He who thunders in the Heavens, crying in the cradle. He is the one who made all flesh, now being being made of flesh. Here is He who could summon the legions of angels and He is wrapped in swaddling clothes, the mighty God becoming a helpless child.”
What an amazing and mysterious event is the virgin birth of Jesus. Without this miraculous birth, this supernatural conception of Christ, there would be no Christmas or Christianity. As Christians we believe God’s inspired word, the Bible, which tells us Jesus was born without a human father. He was conceived within Mary by God, the Holy Spirit. This means so much to us. The Lord was born without sin, lived a sinless life and offered a pure sacrifice of His life for our sings. The Lord Jesus had a dual nature as all God and all man. John 1 tells us that He is pre-existing everlasting God. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God,” (John 1:1-2). Who is the “Word”? Look at John 1:14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we behold His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth,” (John 1:14). The Word is the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal God who saw, “Before Abraham was, I am,” (John 8:58).
This is why we rejoice in Him, sing His praise, and worship His Holy Name. The Eternal God came to earth in flesh, died on a cross, was resurrected from the grave that we might be saved! Merry Christmas!
