Herbert A. “Sonny” Wathen, 90, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, at his home in Shannondale, Indiana.
He was born Dec. 10, 1932, at Clementsville, in Casey County, Kentucky, a son of the late Linus and Annabel (Ewing) Wathen.
On Sept. 4, 1959, he was married to Barbara J. (Stockton) Wathen. They had shared 60 wonderful years together before her passing on July 14, 2020.
Raised in Kentucky, he attended St. Bernard Catholic School. Following school, he served his country honorably in the United States Air Force.
Sonny worked as a finish carpenter for Paul Blanton Construction Company, retiring in the mid-1990s. He was a member of the Thorntown American Legion and served with the military honor guard. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and sharing the fruits of his labor.
Survivors include: children, William (Debra) Wathen of Crawfordsville, Ric (Tina) Stockton of New Market and Gary Stockton of Crawfordsville; grandchildren, Jessica (Ben) Strong, Sarah Wathen, Hannah Wathen, Eric (Jenny) Stockton, Chrissy (Jason) Wheeler, Brandon Stockton and Alison Sheets; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Sonny was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles Wathen, Pete “J.C.” Wathen, Robert Wathen, Joseph Wathen and Adrian Wathen; and three sisters, Sister Margaret Ann, Maggie Fisher and Mary Jo Wathen.
Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at Myers & Hunt Mortuary, 116 W. Plum St., Thorntown. A funeral service, with military rites, is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28 at the funeral home. Pastor Bruce White will officiate. Interment will follow services at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Thorntown.
