Mike Spencer’s commitment to veterans has garnered attention from the Oval Office.
Spencer, who serves as vice president of the Veterans Memorial Park, was presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award for Lifetime Achievement, signed by former President Joe Biden, on Friday.
VMP Board Member Mark Eutsler surprised Spencer with the award prior to the board meeting.
The award celebrates outstanding service achievements of volunteers, while the lifetime achievement is given to individuals that have completed 4,000 or more hours of volunteer service.
Spencer has been a part of several community organizations throughout the years, including the Veterans Memorial Park, American Legion Post 72, American Legion baseball program and the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall.
“Well, a lot of people make me look good,” he said. “I work with the Honor Guard and everybody. I am the head of it, but if it wasn’t for them, it wouldn’t happen. So I’m very humble and I’m very grateful and going to keep on working, because I love doing what I do.”
