With Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb’s response to keep students from returning to school until at least May 1, the IHSAA released a statement saying they have canceled the IHSAA Boys’ Basketball state tournament.
“It is with great sadness and disappointment that we inform Hoosiers of the cancellation of the remaining games of the 2020 IHSAA boys basketball tournament series,” said IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox. “While the Association maintained every hope of continuance, it is now evident those hopes are now unreachable. Albeit there will not be regional, semi-state and state champions crowned across our four classifications, the heath and safety of our public remains paramount and our primary focus.”
This is the first time since the IHSAA adopted boys’ basketball in 1911 that a state champion will not be crowned. Crawfordsville won the first state championship.
The IHSAA also sent a memo to all membered school’s athletic directors regarding spring sports.
They have elected to move all spring athletes into IHSAA By-Law 15-2, which is during school out-of-season status.
The memo stated that it allows parents and students to make an independent determination to seek activity that is non-school sponsored while schools are out of session.
This is NOT an invitation to begin a limited contact period or conditioning which is school sponsored an against the directive of our Governor, the memo continued.
It finished by stating that if we are able to resume on May 1, 2020 the number of separate days of practice necessary to participate in any interscholastic event, including contests shall be set at five.
