In-person early voting begins today

Voters head to the polls beginning today for in-person early voting in next week’s primary election.

Thousands of Montgomery County voters have already mailed in their ballots, as local and state elections offices encouraged Hoosiers to avoid crowds at voting sites due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the state allowed polls to open a week before the election for early voting. Thursday was the deadline to request an absentee ballot for the primary.

Voters can cast a ballot at any one of the following sites:

• Montgomery County 4-H Building, 400 Parke Ave.: 2 to 7 p.m. today-Friday; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; 8 a.m. to noon Monday

• Hoover Elementary, 1301 S. Elm St.: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

On Election Day next Tuesday, in-person voting will be available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at North Montgomery High School (south entrance), Southmont High School and Hoover Elementary.

The county election board approved changing the voting sites to provide enough room for social distancing. Voters will be called up one at a time to sign in, and poll workers will clean the voting stations after every voter.

The Republican ballot features District 1 county commissioner candidates John Frey (incumbent), April Johnson and James Wills; county council at-large candidates Gary Booth (incumbent), Jake Bohlander, John Hedrick II and David Hunt; Superior Court II judge candidates Daniel Petrie and Aaron Spolarich; and coroner candidates Darren Forman (incumbent) and Christopher Imel.

District 3 county commissioner Dan Guard, recorder Jennifer Bentley, surveyor Tom Cummins and clerk Karyn Douglas are all uncontested.

The only contested race on the Democratic ballot is for U.S. representative.
