Joe R. Hathaway, 88, of rural Veedersburg passed away at 10:31 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Franciscan Health Crawfordsville.

Joe was born Dec. 21, 1932, at Danville, Illinois, the son of Marguerite Hanna Hathaway and Rowland F. Hathaway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jerry; and grandson Layton W. Hathaway.

He married Alice L. Landers on Nov. 10, 1956, at Cataumet, Massachusetts, in a military wedding.

Surviving family include: wife Alice L. Hathaway, Veedersburg; two sons, Scott (Debby) Hathaway and Randy (Ann) Hathaway, both of rural Veedersburg; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Joe graduated from Kingman High School in 1950 and Indiana University in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He served as navigator of a RC-121 with the 960th squadron, 551st Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing, Otis Air Force Base. He was proud to have served his country.

Joe worked as an accountant with Timken Roller Bearing in Canton, Ohio. Joe and Alice started their farm career together in 1960 where Alice continues to live today.

Joe served in many organizations including, Tipmont REMC, Wabash Valley Power Association, Fountain Soil & Water Conservation, Kingman Legion Post #384 and the Veedersburg United Methodist Church.

Services will be held Tuesday, June 29 at Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and the funeral service will begin at 4 p.m., with Pastor Dave Inskeep officiating. Graveside military honors provided by the United States Air Force and American Legion Post #288 will follow the service at Kingman Fraternal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial contributions be given to Southeast Fountain Community Foundation, P.O. Box 95, Veedersburg IN 47987.
