As things have started to get back to our new normal, the JUMP program has resumed its monthly group activities. The last two activities have been outdoor events. September was Shades State Park and then this past Saturday the group went to the Oak Hill Maze and Tree Farm in Crawfordsville. It was an absolutely beautiful fall day and they had 20 mentors/mentees attend. There were so many fun things for the kids to do including a zip line, 200-foot slide, a corn maze and a hay ride. Each child went home with a small pumpkin.
The JUMP program is a program where were an adult volunteer or married couple are matched with a child who wants to have a big brother/ big sister type friend and role model. Once they are matched with a child, they do fun things together and develop a friendship that allows that child to have someone they can confide in and depend upon. Studies have shown that kids who have a positive role model in their life are more likely to have high self-esteem, stay in school and don’t get in trouble with the law. Adults who volunteer find they are healthier and more active and feel good about helping out a child in our community. Mentoring is a positive thing and only requires a few hours a month of your time. The Montgomery County Youth Service Bureau, JUMP program, provides one free monthly group activity for the participants in the program should they wish to attend. This allows the mentors to meet and bond with each other as well as allows the mentor one Saturday each month where the activity is already planned and paid for them.
