Knights of Columbus Council 1591 recently held a kickoff dinner for their annual Tootsie Roll Drive supporting Special Olympics. The street corner campaign will be April 25 and 26. Last year the effort raised more than $12,000.
The Knights began partnering with Special Olympics in the 1960s, the Tootsie Roll Drive began in the 1970s. Richard Pond, campaign chairman, spoke of the sponsors who have supported the efforts ans some history of the partnership.
Ben Gregory, a Special Olympics athlete, spoke about his experiences as an athlete and how it has benefited him in his career.
Grand Knight Michael Scheidler thanked those attending and gave a little history of the group.
The annual dinner of corned beef, potatoes, cabbage and carrots has become a tradition topped off with come yummy desserts.
