A 6-year-old border collie/lab mix named Gracie has gone from the animal shelter to top dog at the Montgomery County 4-H Fair.
Six-year 4-H member Mallory Leach won the grand championship for overall showman with Gracie at the dog show, her first top award at the fair.
The grand prize comes after several obedience championships for Leach, whose family adopted Gracie from the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County.
“She’s very focused,” said Leach, 14, a member of the Wayne Winners club. “She knows whenever we’re showing to be serious and not mess around.”
“I think she did really good in the showmanship because she actually listened more,” Leach added.
Leach is the daughter of John and Rachel Leach of Crawfordsville. She also participates in 4-H crafts.
Next year, she hopes to earn the high end trial award for obedience, which is given to the exhibitor with the most points in obedience.
Leach moves on to the Indiana State Fair where she will show in obedience and showmanship.
