The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan, multi-issue organization encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase public understanding of major policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. November 2019 is an important election. Every four years our Indiana election calendar features local elections — city and towns. The League of Women Voters encourages all who live in a district with competition to participate in the November 2019 General Election. Voting is the most fundamental responsibility for citizens in our democracy.
In Montgomery County 21 citizens will have their names on the ballot. They are to be commended for offering to serve as an elected official.
In Crawfordsville, Mayor Todd D. Barton is running unopposed for reelection as is City Clerk-Treasurer Terri J. Gadd.
Four city council seats are also unopposed: Jeff Lucas, Ward 1; Scott Molin, Ward 2; Kent S. Priebe, Ward 3; and Jennifer Lowe, Ward 4. However, in Ward 5, Joyce Burnette (Democrat) is challenging Stan Hamilton (Republican). Three candidates are running for two at-large seats: Andy Biddle (Republican), Mike Reidy (Democrat) and Adam Hutchinson (Libertarian).There are also contests in both Darlington and Ladoga. While Darlington Clerk-Treasurer Michelle Cash is unopposed, there are seven candidates running for three seats on the Darlington Town Council. These are: Kimberley “Kim” Carpenter (Republican), Marilyn S. Cohee (Independent), Ron P. Hatley (Republican), Nicole L. Parker (Republican), Nicholas “Nick” Riddell (Republican), Noelle Suiter (Republican) and Teresa A. Sutherlin (Independent).
In Ladoga, Amy J. Holladay (Independent) is on the ballot for clerk-treasurer. There are four candidates for three town council seats: Elizabeth Beth Flohr (Democrat), James Byron Cox (Independent), Mike Hubble Sr. (Independent) and Lester Miles (Independent).
Early voting offers Montgomery County citizens the chance to start voting Saturday through Nov. 1 at either the courthouse or Rock Point Church, 429 W. C.R. 150S. Voting at the courthouse will be available 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays (Oct. 26 and Nov. 2). Voting at the courthouse will also be available 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Nov. 4.
Voters can also choose to vote early at Rock Point Church from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, (Oct. 26 and Nov. 2).
On Election Day, Nov. 5, voting will take place 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at any of four locations: Rock Point Church; St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 1306 E. Main St.; Darlington Community Center, 105 Franklin St., Darlington; or the Ladoga Public Library, 128 Main St., Ladoga.
Our Montgomery County officials are to be applauded for offering our citizens so many opportunities. The LWV urges you to vote.
