VEEDERSBURG — Even though Lou Lefevre lives nearly three hours away from Fountain Central High School, the new head boys basketball coach is already working with Mustang players.

Lefevre brings a wealth of experience and a long list of accomplishments. He played Division III basketball and has coached in Connecticut, the state where he grew up, and also coached in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Indiana to coach. He has won a total of six sectional titles and two regional titles with stops at Providence, Tipton, North Harrison and Wawasee.

Even with all the hardware on his shelf, Lefevre describes success as a program the players want to be a part of and enjoy their time in a worthwhile experience.

“I want players who want to be in the program and stay excited about playing basketball,” Lefevre said. “I feel success comes from getting guys to play to their full potential and giving players a meaningful experience.”

Lefevre is getting to know his high school players and his junior high players, and he likes what he sees.

“We have players who have some skills,” Lefevre said. “Getting a late start is not the best, but I see we have some talent. It is what it is and when we get to basketball season, we will be ready to go.”

The 58-year-old coach grew up playing basketball in Connecticut. Yet, his high school coach told his players to watch Bobby Knight’s teams at Indiana University to see how to play the game. Subsequently, he grew up a Hoosier fan, but that has not necessarily stuck with him during his coaching days.

“I really don’t have a favorite college team now,” Lefevre said. “But I do appreciate all Coach Painter has done at Purdue.”

Lefevre’s journey has taken him to several states and he sees that as an advantage.

“I can say my experience is a big buffet of basketball,” Lefevre said. “I have a range of experience from inter-city to rural.”

Lefevre admits he does not know a lot about West Central Indiana basketball but he expects to find out quickly and is looking forward to coaching in the area.

“We are excited to have Coach Lefevre at Fountain Central,” said Fountain Central Athletic Director Jason Good. “He brings with him a history of building winning programs and a reputation of being one of the best basketball minds around. Every coach we called said he was one of the most difficult coaches to coach against. We look forward to seeing what he will bring to Mustang basketball.”

Lefevre and his wife, who works as an insurance adjuster, are looking to buy a home in the Fountain Central area. They have an adult son who is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard on the Northern East Coast.
