Letter: Barton supports Byers in auditor’s race

Posted

Voters have two choices for Montgomery County Auditor in the 2022 Republican Primary, and both candidates are good people serving in Montgomery County government.

The county auditor, among many responsibilities, plays a crucial role in ensuring property tax rates are correctly administered. This includes applying the rates from different taxing units, deductions, exemptions and any abatements that might have been granted.

We are entering a critical time in our community, and maintaining continuity and experience in the auditor’s office is imperative to navigating upcoming changes. Successfully doing so will allow local units of government, such as the City of Crawfordsville, to function properly while ultimately protecting residential and business taxpayers.

The next couple of years will see many changes to our tax base, such as the arrival of Tempur-Sealy and significant expansion projects by industries such as Closure Systems International. Unfortunately, this growth in our tax base will be occurring at the same time as profound changes to the structure of business personal property tax enacted by the Indiana legislature.

All of these factors are coming together simultaneously to further complicate an already complex process, and the importance of a county auditor with experience is more crucial than ever.

Mindy Byers currently serves as the chief deputy auditor and possesses more than seven years of experience in the auditor’s office. She combines experience with a dedication focused solely on the auditor’s office and to ensuring its accuracy and efficiency.

I am proud to endorse Mindy Byers and encourage you to please give her your vote so that we maintain experience in the auditor’s office and avoid starting over during such a challenging time.

Todd D. Barton

Crawfordsville Mayor
