Letter: Democrat seeks neighbors’ help in current situation

Posted

I’m writing this letter to my Montgomery County neighbors — Democrats, Republicans, Independents, formerly apolitical — to ask you to attend a meeting of the  Montgomery County Democrats on at 7 p.m. March 24 in the basement of the Crawfordsville District Public Library.

Notice I’m not asking you to join the Democratic Party if you don’t already identify as a Democrat. And if you agree and are comfortable with what is currently going on in our national, state and local politics, I’m not asking you to come to this meeting. But if you feel that things now are not somehow right. If you are uncomfortable with the atmosphere of confusion, chaos, and fear that is at this moment permeating our lives, I urge you to attend so we can work together to find a way back to balance and normalcy in our over 200-year-old form of government.

Our system of government, based on the principle of checks and balances, is currently too strongly weighted toward the Executive branch. What this administration is trying to achieve through the issuing of Executive Orders is blatantly unconstitutional in a number of respects. I will not revisit the specifics here, but clearly the Congress, which our Constitution authorizes to allocate and spend our tax dollars, is not doing its job. The Republican majorities in both houses are currently voting in lock-step, and the damage to our citizens, and people around the world, is becoming more apparent every day.

In a democratic society the only solution to our current situation is political. We must join together to strengthen the two-party system that has been weakened by a variety of factors, and elect officials who support our Constitutional form of government that has served us not perfectly but well. So please consider attending the meeting March 24. The plan is to listen to all ideas that would help us better respond to the current situation, and support candidates in upcoming elections who agree that our system is now dangerously out of balance.
