I’ve crunched the preliminary numbers and they saddened me. Montgomery County on May 7 saw its lowest voter turnout for a presidential primary in at least 32 years.
I’m not naive to the many factors behind the pitiful numbers, not the least of which being a presidential primary race longer than the shelf life of salt, but is all but decided by the time it’s Hoosiers’ turn to vote.
Paltry turnout also does not negate the need for measures to make Indiana’s elections even more accessible by eliminating the voter ID law, enacting same-day or automatic voter registration and allowing no-excuse absentee voting.
I’m just tired of election day feeling like a sports arena in a losing season.
