Letter: Libraries are priceless gifts

Posted

I’m on page 66 of “Dangerous Melodies: Classical Music in America from the Great War through the Cold War” by Hunter College professor Jonathan Rosenberg, and I don’t want it to end. The book was nestled deep in the stacks of Wabash College’s Lilly Library, a nerd’s paradise of scholarship and literature. Nobody on campus has paid me to write this, but did you know Montgomery County residents can obtain a free guest borrower card? (I checked out a second book about the relationship between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren. Cue the drama.)

When I’m not delighting in serendipitous discoveries of knowledge at Wabash, you’ll find me in the stacks of the Crawfordsville District Public Library, where, admittedly, I’m more familiar with the collection, cross-referencing the ever-growing reading list in my iPhone notes with the online catalog. The two libraries are among the finest cultural institutions in Crawfordsville, and the towns of Darlington, Ladoga, Linden, and Waveland are blessed with passionate librarians giving the residents of their communities the joy of learning. What a priceless gift.
