Letter: McCormick’s plan adds accountability

Posted

Public schools are under attack by the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program, also known as the school voucher program. This program was established to allow families of children attending low performing schools to pay tuition to attend private schools. The program originally required students to have attended public schools. Today the voucher program is used by students who have never attended public school, tuition was paid by the students family. The household income for students to receive vouchers in the 2024-25 school year is $230,880 for a family of four. The income requirements are revised annually. Applications are required for private, charter and virtual schools, students are chosen from the applications submitted. These schools do not provide transportation, and are not accountable for taxpayer funds. They are not required to hire certified teachers, to follow a required curriculum or to hold accreditation.

Public schools are required to accept all students living in the area they serve, they must provide transportation, and are accountable for taxpayers dollars. Public schools are governed by the elected school board, hire certified teachers and are accredited. Funding for public schools is reduced when students move to private, charter or virtual schools because the funding follows the student.

Dr. Jennifer McCormick is a life-long educator who is running for Indiana Governor. Part of her plan for Indiana education is to pause the expansion of the school privatization movement while requiring fiscal and academic accountability and transparency for all Indiana schools that receive public tax dollars.

The Indiana Constitution states: Knowledge and learning are essential to the preservation of a free government.
