Letter: Value democracy? Vote Harris

Posted

Why does Trump like Victor Orban? Since becoming prime minister of Hungary in 2010, Orban has limited freedom of the press and rigged the voting and judicial systems. In 2020 the parliament declared a state of emergency, granting Orban the power to rule by decree and suspending elections. Hungary is no longer a democracy, but an “electoral autocracy.” Orban is the dictator that Trump aspires to be.

If you think I’m exaggerating, let’s look at the evidence. First let’s consider what Trump said. He promised to be a dictator on his first day in office, and he told Christians to “get out and vote, just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore.” We should take him at his word. We can also look at Trump’s past actions for evidence of his intentions. In 2020 he ignored the will of the voters and tried to stay in power even though he lost. After the election he asked the Georgia Secretary of State to “find 11,780 votes.” On Jan. 6, 2021, he attempted to stage a coup against the Constitution.

Even Republican former national security leaders think that a Trump presidency would be dangerous; 111 of them signed a letter saying that “Donald Trump cannot be trusted ‘to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’”

If you value democracy, vote for Kamala Harris.
