In the past month Jared McMurry and the Journal Review staff came up with the “Best of the Decade” for Male Athlete, Female Athlete, Teams and Moments for the that decade that just ended.
Staying with that trend, this column is how about a look back at the athletes who scored 1,000 in boys’ basketball in the past decade.
While Montgomery County has a basketball tradition that dates back to the 1900s, this past decade has produced a number of players who reached that exclusive list of being a 1,000-point scorer in their respective high school career.
The newest addition to the list was Southmont’s Cam Chadd. He ended his high school career with 1,479 points of fifth place on the all-time list of Montgomery County scorers. The only basketball players to ever score more points than Chadd were

• D.J. Byrd (North Montgomery) 1,785
• Bill Greve (Waveland) 1,777
• Matt Petty (Crawfordsville) 1,608
Chadd, a 2018 graduate, is now continuing his basketball career at Wabash College where he just saw his first action this past weekend.
A total of 10 players added their names to the list in the past decade.
North Montgomery graduate Caleb Randolph (2017) led the way for Charger players being added to the list. The sharp-shooting guard poured in 1,252 points.
Next in line came the first of two Burton brothers to make the list. Austin (2012) ended his Southmont career with a total of 1,218 points.
Next came Grant Gayler (2015), another North Montgomery grad. The Chargers star ended his high school career with 1,130 before heading to Bethel where his career was cut short due to injuries.
The second half of the Burton brother duo – Devon (2014) – checked in with 1,091 points and was one of four Southmont players to be added to the list during that past 10 years.
The first person to join the club in this past decade was Southmont’s Trent Murray who posted 1,065 points before graduating in 2011.
Crawfordsville’s first representative was Cameron Harris who tallied 1,082 points before graduating in 2018. Caleb Rasmussen (2012) joined Harris as Athenians joining the small list of 1,000 scorers when he ended his career with 1,033.
North Montgomery’s Justin Clary (2018) also made the list with 1,032 points in his career.
The final new member of the 1,000-Point Club is Southmont’s Kaleb Swick (2017) who concluded his career with 1,015 points. He is now continuing his basketball career at Trine University.
We added 10 (nearly 25 percent) to the current list of 41 members to the county’s 1,000-Point Club. How many will we see added to this club this decade?
