Little Giants split conference doubleheader with Kenyon

Wabash earned a split of a North Coast Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Kenyon College Monday afternoon at Goodrich Ballpark. The Little Giants cruised to a 19-2 victory in the series opener but lost game two 7-1.

Senior first baseman Camden Sheidt tied two Wabash career records in the first game of twin bill. He laced a double down the right field line in the sixth inning to tie the Little Giants’ career record for doubles with his 50th two-base knock. The hit also tied him with AJ Reid for the career hits mark with 210.

 

GAME 1 | Wabash 19, Kenyon 2

Evan Neukam, Benjamin Henke, and Scheidt each racked up two extra-base hits to help lead the Little Giants past the Owls 19-2 on Monday.

Caleb Everson (5-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Wabash (22-10, 9-3 NCAC). The right-hander went seven innings for the complete-game victory, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out five.

Scheidt’s two extra-base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, including a double, a home run, a walk, and seven RBI. Henke contributed with two doubles and five RBI, part of a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Neukam also helped out for the Little Giants, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and a triple.

The Little Giants put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Wabash’s offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Henke and a two-run single from Scheidt.

The Little Giants expanded on their advantage in the third inning after the Owls cut it to 6-1. The Wabash offense exploded for another six-run inning, highlighted by a three-run double off Henke, bringing the score to 12-1 in favor of the Little Giants.

Kenyon (13-12, 6-4 NCAC) narrowed Wabash’s lead to 12-2 before the Little Giants stretched the advantage to 16-2 in the fourth inning. The Little Giants bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off Scheidt’s bat.

Wabash held the Owls without a run before expanding their lead in the sixth inning, bringing the advantage to 19-2.

 

GAME 2 | Kenyon 7, Wabash 1

Wabash got three hits from Neukam in a 7-1 loss to the Owls in game two of the doubleheader.

Senior Grant Stratton (2-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Wabash). Junior Jackson Woehr was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going four innings and surrendering one run on three hits.

In addition to his three hits, Neukam had two triples to lead the Little Giants to tie the Wabash single-game record for three-base hits in a single game.

Trailing 5-0, the Little Giants first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Freshman Ryan Keating came across to score the lone run of the inning for Wabash on a sacrifice fly by Will Phillips. The Little Giants could not get any closer, as Kenyon added two runs to their tally on the way to a 7-1 final.
