LEBANON — A Crawfordsville couple welcomed Leap Year baby, Dahlia Newlin, on Saturday at Witham Health Services, Lebanon.

Parents Shelbi Bennington and Cameron Newlin surprised the obstetrics/maternity staff at Witham with an early delivery.

“No one thought we were going to have a Leap Year baby this year,” said MaryBeth Searles, director of marketing at Witham Health Services.

Newlin was not due until Saturday, but decided to make her entrance at 11:40 p.m. Feb. 29, weighing 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measuring 21 inches long. She was welcomed home by two sisters and one brother.

Newlin joins the ranks of babies born on this date also known as “leapers” or “leap lings,” who celebrate their actual birthday every four years.

Her parents say she will celebrate her birthday on March 1 of each year.

Witham’s obstetrics wing has been open since 2003 and has had seven “leapers” before Newlin. One born in 2008, two in 2012 and four in 2016.
