Local rally planned at courthouse

Residents are showing solidarity with local teachers over demands for higher pay.

Members of the community will rally from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday on the sidewalk in front of the Montgomery County Couthouse on East Main Street.

Mayor Todd Barton and Dr. Kathy Steele, former Crawfordsville schools superintendent, are scheduled to speak.

The event is sponsored by Humans United for Equality.

The rally comes the same day thousands of Hoosier educators will join together at the Indiana Statehouse, calling for lawmakers to raise teacher compensation, hold schools harmless for low I-LEARN scores and scrap professional growth plans or externship requirements for teacher licenses.

About 90 local teachers have registered for the Statehouse rally. Crawfordsville schools are closed Tuesday, while North and South Montgomery will remain in session.
