Mounties fall to ranked Bruins

The Southmont girls’ soccer team fell to Class 2A No. 9 ranked Tri-West 1-0 on Monday night.

The Bruins took an early lead in the 15th minute on a Laura Wire goal, and controlled the possession for most of the game in the Sagamore Conference victory.

Otherwise, the Mounties put up a strong fight against one of the toughest teams on their schedule.

“I think we need a very nice job tonight playing against a good team,” Southmont coach Phil Keller said. “You could kind of tell that once they showed up, they thought it was going to be an easy win and did not come out and ready to play at all.

“It’s the same thing I said after Danville, we are not the same team anymore. We are not going to be pushovers and not going to come in thinking we are going to lose. We are going to make you earn the win.”

Tri-West had 27 shots for the game against just three for Southmont. The Bruins squared up 14 on goal, which provided 13 saves for Southmont goalkeeper Belle Miller.

“We have to continue to develop (offensively),” Keller added. “We’ve got a lot of good girls, but when you’re playing against a bunch of girls who play club soccer year-round and we have a bunch of three-sport athletes, it’s very difficult to gain that experience like it would be for them.”
