LOCAL ROUNDUP: Young runners lead Athenians to XC titles

Cville XC sweeps invite

Led by freshman Sophia Melevage and sophomore Ryan Miller, the Crawfordsville cross country teams swept the Keith Puckett Invite at South Putnam on Saturday to kick off the 2021 season.

Melevage won the girls’ race with a time of 21:10, leading the Athenians to the team title with 48 points.

Junior Elyse Widmer was ninth in 23:32, while Shelby Greene was 11th in 23:42, Karla Fernandez 15th in 24:20 and Olivia Biddle 16th in 24:23. Skylah Strawser placed 20th in 24:46. Gabby Warren was Crawfordsville’s seventh runner, placing 28th in 25:56.

Southmont’s Faith Allen placed third overall with a time of 21.24, while North Montgomery’s Claire Bonwell was 22nd in 24:59.

Grace Simpson placed 45th for the Mounties in 28:34, while Kylee Reeves was 57th in 31:24. 

On the boys’ side, Miller was the runner-up in 18:38 to lead the Athenians to the team title with 44 points. Freshman Max Brummet laced sixth in 19:33, while Tyson Fuller was ninth in 19:44, and Arthur Ruano 12th in 19:48. Hutton Haas placed 15th in 19:59 and Ian Hensley 16th in 20:03. Peter Kearns was 46th in 22:37.

Led by Tim Lueking’s 14th-place finish in 19:55, North Montgomery placed 5th, while Aaron Evans led Southmont to an eighth-place finish with a 17th-place finish in 20:04.

Paul Lueking was 21st in 20:51 and Nolan Yarger 23rd in 21:08 for the Chargers. Jack Rogers placed 33rd in 21:52, and Wil Campbell 58th in 23:26. 

Southmont’s Skyler Woods was 43rd in 22:30, Hunter Alesi 51st in 22:56, Clay Allen 57th in 23.22 and Brett Keller 66th in 24:03.

Mounties draw with Bulldogs

The Southmont girls’ soccer team opened the 2021 season with a 1-1 draw at home against Monrovia on Saturday.

The Mounties allowed an own-goal in the first half, before Lillie Odum tied the game with a second-half goal.

Mounties compete at Zionsville Invite

The Southmont girls’ golf team competed at the Zionsville Invitational at the Golf Club of Indiana on Saturday.

The Mounties fired a 386 led by freshman Addison Meadows’ 82, which was 10th overall individually in the 10-team invite that featured seven top-15 teams in the state.

Macie Shirk fired a 94, Taylor Grino a 97, Bailey Barker a 113, and Stella Snook a 126.
