Athenians lose heartbreaker to Bison

The Crawfordsville boys’ tennis team fell to Benton Central 3-2 on Monday night in a tightly-contested match.

Aust Motz picked up a win at No. 1 singles over Cael Williams 7-5, 6-1, while James Murphy stayed undefeated at No. 3 singles with a win over Landon Breghton 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles Thatcher Gambrel lost 7-5, 6-1 to Blake Buchanan, while James Novak and Thomas Bowling lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. 

The duo of Zach Fichter and Ziair Morgan fell in three sets to Nick Fry and Connor Hall 6-1, 6-7, (7-1 tiebreak).

“We lost a nail biter tonight against a good team tonight. I’m proud of the way my guys played. James Murphy managed to stay undefeated in a three set victory, and I was really impressed by the way Austin Motz buckled down and dialed in after a close first set,” Crawfordsville coach Craig Brainard said.” He showed a confident presence the second set and did what he needed to do to win the match. Overall, I was thrilled with the way our guys fought to keep things close.

Mustangs split with Trojans, Wolves

The Fountain Central girls’ golf team finished second in a three-way meet wth Covington and Parke Heritage on Monday, firing a 220.

Nola Wells was co-medalist with a 49, while Cassadi Parks shot a 51, Emily Keeling a 59 and Aubrey Hicks a 61.

Tiger Cubs handle CHS

The Crawfordsville girls’ soccer team fell to Greencastle 5-1 on Monday.

Pitchaya Ruby scored the lone Athenian goal, with the assist from Lorelei Scmitzer-Torbert.

Cougars sweep Mounties

The Southmont volleyball team was swept by North Putnam on Monday 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18).

Kaley Remley led the Mounties with 15 kills, while Sidney Veatch had 17 assists, three kills, and an ace. Chelsea Veatch had 10 digs and three kills, with two aces, while Reagan Remley had three kills and a block. 

Natalie Manion had eight digs and Abbey Gass had three aces.

The Mounties are now 1-1 and return to the court on Thursday at home against Covington.
