LOCAL SPORTS: Athenians, Mounties golf wins, Mustang tennis advances to sectional final

Mustangs advance to sectional final

The Fountain Central girls’ tennis team defeated Benton Central 3-2 on Thursday night in the sectional semifinal to advance to Friday’s championship where they will face Covington.

Lillie Fishero defeated Jenna Fleming 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Haley Webb beat Kinlyn Yadon 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Angela Gonzalez beat Sophie Cobb 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot.

The duo of Emily Jimenez and Paige Scheurich fell to Lilly Cobb and Devan Plummer 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Tyler Bowling and Marylee Muniz lost to Emma Besse and Paige Creek 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Athenians win at HH

The Crawfordsville boys’ golf team fired a 173 at Harrison Hills on Thursday night to defeat Fountain Central (192) and Attica (231).

Luke Ranard was the medalist with a low score of 40, while Landon Timmons fired a 42, and Hayden Jeffries a 45. Braxton Smith fired a 46, Landon Hurt a 47, Marshall Horton 56, and Thomas Bowling 57.

“After a collective off day at conference, the guys put together a solid round at the sectional venue,” Crawfordsville coach Tom Perkins said. “The short games were excellent today — very few wasted shots. They’re starting to believe in their ability, and that’s fun.”

Matt York and Wesley Jackson led the Mustangs with 47s.

Mounties beat Warriors

The Southmont boys’ golf team defeated Danville 169-191 on Thursday night.

Luke Tesmer was the medalist with a low score of 41. Micah Korhorn fired a 42, while Nolan Allen and Harrison Haddock each shot 43. Briley Bennett fired a 45, while Carson McKinney and Tanner Walls shot 49s, while Gabriel Little shot a 58. 

Southmont is now 28-3 on the season.

Chargers fall to Knights

The North Montgomery baseball team fell to Lafayette Central Catholic 10-3 on Thursday.

Max Verduin and Jacob Braun each had two hits for the Chargers. 

Mustangs shutout by Oracles

The Fountain Central baseball team fell to Delphi 11-1 on Thursday night.

Carson Eberly, CJ Yager, and Michael Geller each had hits for the Mustangs.

Athenians fall to Tigers

The Crawfordsville softball team fell 21-11 to Lebanon on Thursday night.

Halle Elliott led the Athenians with 4 hits, while Olivia Reed, Allyson Barton, Laine Schlicher, and Alexus McCaskill each had two hits. McCaskill also drove in four runs.
