LOCAL SPORTS: Mountie wrestlers, Athenian boys' swimmers open season with win

Mountie wrestlers open season with win
The Southmont wrestling team defeated Covington 51-18 on Tuesday night to open the season.
At 120 pounds Marlin Williams won by fall over Gage Pearman, while Evan Francis pinned Andrew Bertchold at 160 and Riley Woodall pinned Kaedeyn Lawson at 182.
Wyatt Woodall earned a win by fall over Connor Winn at 195, while Collin Martin pinned Ty Smaltz at 220 and Zayden Dunn won 3-2 over Nate Sly in ultimate overtime.

North falls to Frankfort
The North Montgomery wrestling team dropped a Sagamore Conference match 36-27 to Frankfort on Tuesday.
Cailin Campbell won by fall over Emma Pillion at 126, while James McClerkin won by fall over Daniel Garcia at 152 pounds, and Jacob Rice pinned Miguel Gabriel at 170 and Todd Laffoon won by fall over Nelson Honore at 195. Christian Hall won by decision 12-11 over Juan Canious at 145.

Mustangs fall to Gophers
The Fountain Central girls’ basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Clinton Prairie 58-28 on Tuesday.
Dakota Borman led the Mustangs with 10 points, while Jerzi Hershberger added nine.

Athenian boys sweep in the pool
The Crawfordsville boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving teams opened up the season on Tuesday night against Fountain Central and Western Boone. On the boys’ side, the Athenians defeated Western Boone 101-51 and Fountain Central 98-46. The Mustangs fell to the Stars 75-63. On the girls’ side, Western Boone defeated Crawfordsville 131-31 and Fountain Central 134-40, while the Mustangs defeated the Athenians 74-41.
Evan Chaney, Jack Pendleton, Thristan Callejas, and Whitman Horton teamed up for a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.16, while the same foursome won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.75.
Callejas won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.9 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.82 seconds. Horton won the 200 individual medley in 2:09.86, and the 100 backstroke in 59.56 seconds. Pendleton won the 50 freestyle in 23.48 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 52.25 seconds. Chaney won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.46, while Airton Schu won the 500 freestyle in 6:01.15.
Fountain Central’s Chase Witsman, Eli Davis, Dylan Songer, and Riley Nelson won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:59.85.
On the girls’ side, Crawfordsville’s Alyx Bannon won the 50 freestyle in 26.11 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 59.18 seconds. Trinity Deck won the diving portion with a mark of 209.1.

Chargers split with Hot Dogs
The North Montgomery girls’ swimming and diving team defeated Frankfort 118-58, while the Hot Dogs defeated the Charger boys’ 101-37.
Sidney Campbell won both the 50 and 100 backstroke, while Kelsey Anderson won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Maggie Michael won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, while Annabel Anderson won the 200 freestyle, Claire Bonwell the 500 freestyle and Jess Clark the diving portion.
On the boys’ side, Caleb Cochran won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Ben Eldridge won the 100 breaststroke and James McClerkin won the diving portion.
