LOCAL SPORTS: Mounties beat Tigers for first time since 2009, Mustang golfers win Bi-County

Craig lifts Mounties past Tigers

Trailing 7-6 in the seventh, Marissa Craig drove in a pair of runs to lift Southmont past Lebanon 8-7 for the Mounties first win over the Tigers since 2009.

“It was an exciting, hard-fought game,” Southmont coach Dan Taylor said. “Really good game in the Sagamore Conference and a good come from behind win on the road. Marissa stepped up.”

Southmont took a 6-1 lead with a six-run third inning, but Lebanon responded with two in the bottom of the third, before taking a 7-6 lead with  four-run fifth. Josie Hollingsworth hit a three-run home run in the four-run inning.

Craig’s decisive hit was one of two for the junior, who drove in three runs. In all the Mounties had 11 hits in the win, including two from Taylor Grino. Natalie Manion scored two runs.

“We’ve never hit well over here,” Taylor said. “We probably haven’t scored eight runs the last four trips over here. Our girls did a great job and never gave up.”

Lebanon will visit Southmont on Thursday. 

Mustangs win Bi-County golf title

The Fountain Central boys’ golf team fired a two-day 18-hole score of 389 to win the Bi-County Tournament on Tuesday night. Covington shot a 393, Seeger a 413, and Attica 481.

Jacob Keeling’s 93 was the third best score of the tournament, while Matt York’s 94 was fourth.

Mounties fall to Tigers

Southmont baseball fell at Lebanon 2-0 on Tuesday.

The Tigers plated both of their runs in the sixth inning, breaking a scoreless tie. Nick Scott pitched a complete game for the Mounties, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out eight. Adam Cox and Lee Whitecotten each had two hits to lead Southmont.

Athenians sweep Hot Dogs

The Crawfordsville girls’ tennis team swept Frankfort 5-0 on Tuesday night.

Lauren Hale beat Gibby Pierce 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Hannah McLean beat Santos 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Samantha Rohr defeated Raelyn Mitchell 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 position.

Cathleen McGrady and Ella Hudson teamed up to beat Ariana Regalado and Maria Guijosa 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Lilly Klingbeil and Elyse Widmer beat Odalis Campos and Carleigh Williams 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.

Mustangs down Eagles

The Fountain Central girls’ tennis team swept South Putnam 5-0 on Tuesday.

Lillie Fishero defeated Brinlee Clark 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Haley Webb beat Sammi Jones 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Angela Gonzalez beat Catherine Hodge 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position.

The duo of Paige Scheurich and Emily Jimenez beat Jaydon Vemsko and Averee Blaydes 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Tyler Bowling and Marylee Muniz beat Sydnee Boswell and Alie Newby 6-3, 6-2.

South falls to Lebanon

The Southmont girls' tennis team lost to Sagamore Conference foe Lebanon 3-2 on Tuesday.

Hanna Long won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Dori Frederick and Bailey Barker picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
