LOCAL SPORTS: Mounties pickup wins in golf, tennis; Athenians stay unbeaten in volleyball

Mounties shutout by Warriors

The Southmont boys’ soccer team was shutout 4-0 by Sagamore Conference foe Danville on Tuesday night.

Athenians fall to Tigers

The Crawfordsville boys’ tennis team dropped a Sagamore Conference match 4-1 to Lebanon on Tuesday evening.

James Murphy picked up the lone win for the Athenians at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0 over Mathias Baldwin. Austin Motz lost at No. 1 singles 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to John Gascho, while Thatcher Gambrel lost to Matthew Keith 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot.

The duo of Zack Fichter and Ziair Morgan fell to Lukas LePage and Matthew Barber 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, while James Novak and Thomas Bowling lost to Jackson Shephard and Reece Guyman 7-5, 6-0.

“It was another tough loss,” Crawfordsville coach Craig Brainard said. “There was improvement on things we’ve been looking to improve on, but other than that we fell short.”

Mounties sweep Hot Dogs

The Southmont boys’ tennis team swept Frankfort 5-0 on Tuesday night to move to 6-6 on the season and 3-1 in Sagamore Conference play. 

Adam Cox defeated Jim Ostler 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Luke Tesmer beat Chase Thomas 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 slot, and Luke Watson blanked Eli Grasham 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

The duo of Micah Korhorn and Mason Hall downed Elijah West and Luke Hodge 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Chayce Howell and Harrison Haddock beat Colin and Aidan Hudspith 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 3 position.

Athenians compete at Ulen

The Crawfordsville girls’ golf team competed against Lebanon at Ulen Country Club on Tuesday night. The Athenians fired a 220.

Bailey Mittal fired a 48, Evie Redding shot a 52 and Gwyn Redding a 57. Sadie Walker and Carli Payne each fired 63s.

Mounties beat Cougars on the links

The Southmont girls’ golf team defeated North Putnam 208-227 on Tuesday at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

Macie Shir was the medalist with a 47, while Taylor Grino fired a 50 and Bailey Barker a 55. Stella Snook and Olivia Gray each shot a 56 and Hanna Long fired a 59. Courtlyn Carpenter shot a 64.

Mounties fall to Hot Dogs

The Southmont girls’ soccer team dropped a Sagamore Conference match to Frankfort 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Marissa Craig, Lillie Odum, and Jordan Stanley each had goals for the Mounties.

“The girls fought through a lot of adversity,” Southmont coach Phil Keller said. “Their determination, hard work, and good character that they maintained throughout the game was remarkable and speaks a lot to our girls character. I am very proud of how hard our girls fought.”

Athenians sweep Falcons

The Crawfordsville volleyball team swept North Vermillion 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-5) on Tuesday night.

Laine Schlicher had 14 assists, five digs, and three kills, while Hallie Gayler had an ace, two digs and a kill. Macy Bruton had 14 kills and five aces, while Shea Williamson had five digs, two aces, and eight assists. Olivia Reed had two digs and an ace. Allyson Barton had two digs, while Alyx Bannon had seven kills and block.

Mounties fall to Tri-West

The Southmont volleyball team was swept by Sagamore Conference foe Tri-West 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) on Tuesday.

Sidney Veatch led the Mounties with nine kills, a block and four digs and eight assists. Chelsea Veatch added five kills, seven assists and five digs.

Natalie Manion had 18 digs and four assists, while Kaley Remley had four kills, four digs and five aces. Reagan Remley added five digs and a block.
