Long ball leads to doubleheader sweep at OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio ­— Wabash hammered four home runs, including a grand slam and three-run shot from Camden Scheidt as part of an eight RBI day to lead the Little Giants to a doubleheader North Coast Athletic Conference sweep of Ohio Wesleyan. Wabash won game one 14-3 before closing out the series with a 15-5 win in game two. Both games ended in eight innings due to the ten-run rule.

Scheidt went 4-for-6 in game one with an RBI double and a towering three-run homer over the right field scoreboard at Littick Field. He picked up three hits in five at bats in game two, blasting a grand slam in the second inning off the scoreboard in right field to give Wabash the lead it never relinquished.

Schedit moved into a tie for the Wabash career lead in walks with his 102nd base on balls. He also collected his 100th career RBI with the grand slam in the second game.

Ben Henke added a three-run homer in game one. Will McKinzie hit a solo shot in the eighth inning of game two.

 

GAME 1 | Wabash 14, Ohio Wesleyan 3

Senior Camden Scheidt collected four hits to help lead the Little Giants over Ohio Wesleyan 14-3.

Junior Caleb Everson (4-2) started on the mound and picked up the win for Wabash (18-7, 7-1). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out four. Junior Jackson Woehr also made an impact on the mound for the Little Giants, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.

Scheidt had a double, a home run, four total hits, and four RBI to lead the Little Giants. Junior Ben Henke went 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk, and four RBI. Senior Michael Galanos also helped out for Wabash, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

The Little Giants got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fifth inning. Wabash’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single from freshman DJ Mendez.

The Little Giants then held the Battling Bishops scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Wabash offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Henke, which brought the score to 10-0 in favor of the Little Giants.

Ohio Wesleyan narrowed Wabash’s lead to 10-1 before the Little Giants stretched the advantage to 11-1 in the seventh inning.

The Battling Bishops fought back, closing the gap to 11-3 until Wabash added some insurance in the eighth. The inning resulted in three runs for the Little Giants, all scoring on a three-run homer from Scheidt to right, bringing the score to 14-3 in favor of Wabash. The score remained 14-3 for the rest of the game as the Little Giants coasted to the win.

GAME 2 | Wabash 15, Ohio Wesleyan 5

Scheidt racked up four RBIs to help lead Wabash past the Battling Bishops 15-5.

Senior Robbie Manuzzi (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Wabash. The southpaw went three innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing two walks, and striking out one. Senior Grant Stratton also made an impact on the mound for the Little Giants, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up four runs, one earned, on nine hits, with no walks and six strikeouts.

Scheidt went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and a walk in addition to his four RBIs for the Little Giants. Mendez also put together a standout performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. McKinzie also helped out for Wabash, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.

Trailing 3-0, the Little Giants first put runs on the board in the second inning. Wabash’s offense started clicking and put up eight runs, including Scheidt’s grand slam off the bat and a two-run single from Mendez.

The Little Giants then held the Battling Bishops scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. Mendez came across to score the lone run of the inning for Wabash, which brought the score to 9-3 in favor of the Little Giants.

Ohio Wesleyan narrowed Wabash’s lead to 9-5 before the Little Giants stretched the advantage to 10-5 in the sixth inning. The Little Giants scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Mendez.

Wabash held the Battling Bishops without a run before building on their lead in the eighth inning. The Little Giants scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of senior Will Phillips, bringing the score to 15-5 in favor of Wabash. The score remained 15-5 for the rest of the game as the Little Giants coasted to the win.
