Amie Anthrop’s third and four seasons guiding the Fountain Central girls’ basketball team in 2015 ended as one of the best in program history.
The Mustangs won 21 games against just four losses, captured their first IHSAA Sectional title since 2002, and advanced to the regional final before falling to Class 2A No. 4 ranked Wabash 60-52.
Fountain Central avenged a regular season loss to Seeger by defeating the Patriots 39-23 just seven days later in the opening round of the sectional, before beating Clinton Central 72-22 in the semi-final. The Mustangs then beat Riverton Parke 43-32 in the championship. They would later defeat Sheridan 57-55 in the regional semifinal, before falling to Wabash.
“It feels amazing. Yesterday during shoot around I had the girls look at the sign in the gym that said 2002,” Anthrop told the Journal Review after the game. “I told them that we have the opportunity to make history. I told them that twenty years from now they will be able to come back to the gym and see 2015 up on that sign and know that they accomplished something for the team but also for their school.”
“The girls played their hearts out, and never once thought about giving up when things got difficult in the second half. I am very lucky to be able to coach such a great group of young ladies.”
The Mustangs have not won a sectional title since, as the 2015 group led by then sophomore Macee Williams had perfect chemistry.
Williams led Fountain Central with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Maggie Fishero added seven points. Williams is now the two-time defending Horizon League Player of the Year, and just recently led IUPUI to its first NCAA tournament berth.
Fountain Central held a 41-39 lead over the No. 4 ranked Apaches in the regional final, but Wabash outscored the Mustangs 21-11 in the fourth quarter.
