Maple Grove Extension Homemakers

We started our new year with our meeting being held at the Waynetown Baptist Church. President Sandra Lightle welcomed 10 members and one special guest, Montgomery County Home Extension Treasurer, Peggy Craig. Lightle read an inspiration on how God is always there to help us in all situations. The members recited the pledges, creed and mission statement. The roll call was answered with “your favorite state park.” Treasurer Betty Jeffers gave the treasurer’s report. She also stated that she had not sent any cards this past month. We did not have any birthdays or anniversaries. Song leaders, Carol Crowder and Linda Miller led us in “God Bless America.” We all felt this was an appropriate selection with conditions as they are in our country at the present time. Lightle was the hostess and she served us a piece of scrumptious pie.

As one of our service projects we took wash clothes and sewed in pockets and filled the pockets with soap, toothbrushes, combs and other items to be given to children by Child Services. We also presented Child Services with $50 in gift cards to be used for food for the children.

A donation was taken up to repay Carol Vice for the fleece material she had ordered for the blankets which is another service project. Linda Miller said that there were 117 Crescendo singers from all over the state that went to Shipshewana for a workshop to prepare music for the year. There were 12 members from Montgomery County who attended the workshop.

We were reminded of many events coming up along with the dates:

• Sept. 14 is the fall council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the 4-H Building.

• Sept. 21 is lunch at Lavina’s and our monthly meeting will follow. Let Judy McBride know if you plan to attend this luncheon and if you are bringing a guest by Sept. 15. You will need to be at Lavina’s by 11:45 a.m. for lunch.

• Sept. 24 is the deadline to order nuts for the holidays. Contact Peggy Craig.

• Oct. 12 is International Night at 6 p.m. at the 4-H Building.

• Oct, 13, 20 and 21 are noodle making days.

• Nov. 6 is the Holiday Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 4-H Building.

• March 2022 is the deadline for cancer research jars.

Our Health and Safety report was that we all need to protect ourselves concerning the virus. We also need to put in our first aid kits at home and in our vehicles to include a tube of crazy glue and skin tape. The glue will close up a laceration that is not deep and the tape will help hold it together. This could save you a trip to the emergency room.

We recited the club collect and then we started working on the blankets. Vice had ordered the fleece material for the blankets. The blankets will go to Riley Hospital, police and fire departments. Craig helped get us started on making the blankets. She showed us how to cut, and make the fringe on the edges. She helped with the cutting and she had plenty of patience with the group. We all appreciated her coming to our meeting and helping us get started on the blankets. McBride, Vice and Rita Kirkpatrick attended the Fountain County Lafayette District Fall Extension Homemaker Meeting. Carol Freese was the speaker and she gave us a great deal of information on the early days in Covington and surrounding areas. Michelle Roberts, the State President-elect, had lots of information and encouraged everyone to attend the state meeting.
