Martha Jo Walker Cabbage, 94, of Crawfordsville passed away Friday, March 7, 2025, at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville.

She was born Aug. 19, 1930, to Norman R. Walker and Agnes Mildred Hurst Walker.

Her first job was working at the Ladoga Canning Factory at the age of 13. Then she worked at the Turkey Run Inn as a waitress for a short time and then in high school as a switchboard operator.

Martha Jo was a 1948 graduate of Waveland High School and then took a secretarial course at Indiana Business College, finishing at the end of 1948.

She then worker for Union Federal Savings and Loan typing mortgage exemption forms and also worked at Lincoln Federal Savings and Loan in the savings department before going to work at RR Donnelly and Sons in the clerical department .

Martha Jo took a public speaking class under the direction of Dr. O’Rourke, a professor at Wabash College with several of her BPW friends and colleagues and also a written communications class under the direction of Dr. Bob Henry, also a Wabash College Professor.

Martha Jo and Donald E. Cabbage were married Jan. 1, 1950, at the Waveland Christian Church. He survives.

She was a current member of East Side Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was also a past member and choir director of the First Nazarene Church. She was also past secretary of the Donnelly Club, recording secretary of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, a member of the Montgomery County Chorus and sang in the Messiah under the direction of Dr. Richard Bowen and again later under the direction of Mrs. Karen Fruits, a member of the Crescendo’s, directed by Marsha Smith. She also volunteered at the Wesley Thrift Shop and was part of the Lenten Breakfast Committee. She loved the Lord, family, friends and music.

She is also survived by two nieces, three nephews, eight great nephews, one great step niece, special friend and sister-in-law, Diana Walker and Valorie Barr, a niece by marriage.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, William E. Walker and John C. Walker.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at East Side Baptist Church, with Steve Whicker and Nathan Chambers officiating. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. and burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Grant Avenue.
