Montgomery County Master Gardeners and volunteers showed up early Oct. 24 for the final “clean-up” at the Nicholson School Garden Project; Growing Together.
Nine people, gloved and tools in hand were ready to work. The group had two truck beds available to fill with garden debris; flower seeds to save and the final picking of peppers and gathering of onions for the “final harvest.” Having so many hands made the chore go quickly. Lastly, piles of fallen leaves from the surrounding trees were raked over the bare garden space as a blanket of fall mulch.
This little garden space yielded 900 pounds of fresh produce for the 2020 season and kept the local Fish Food Pantry supplied each week.
Only thing missing were the second and thirrd graders (COVID-19 pandemic situation). In previous garden seasons the students were a source of wonderment and excitement as they soaked up garden knowledge and know how. Master Gardener members taught them everything from how to plant seeds, to using garden tools, and how to water and weed their way to the harvest. Enthusiasm with a capital “E” was the badge worn by all.
