Mayor Todd Barton has proclaimed Saturday as Montgomery County United Band and Guard Winter Winds Day. Citizens are encouraged to recognize, and honor, the dedicated hard work by young citizens of the community who are members of Montgomery County United Winter Winds, along with their coaches, teachers, parents and volunteers who selflessly give of themselves to contribute to their success today and into the future.

MCU Winter Winds is comprised of students from Crawfordsville, North Montgomery and Southmont high schools and is under the direction of Andrew Simpkins, Elizabeth Newnum and Kevin Brooks.

After competitions at Greenfield Central, Decatur Central and Pendleton Heights, MCU Winter Winds has advanced to compete in the IPA State Finals at Center Grove.

“This season may not have been ideal but it’s definitely one I won’t be forgetting, it’s so unique and something I’m happy to say was a memorable last season for our seniors,” North Montgomery senior Alexia Klingaman said.

MCU Winter Winds has the support of Mark and Therese Eutsler, along with businesses such as Steel Dynamics, Street Penguin Gelato & More, Quinlan & Fabish Music Co. and Schoolhouse Storage and Venues.

The proclamation further states that students who participate in MCU Winter Winds build character and learn life skills through the marching arts.

“Losing our summer season was tough; I’m thankful for opportunities like Winter Winds to be able to our students a creative outlet not only for our seniors, but for new students who were planning to start their marching legacy,” Newnum said. “Our success is because of volunteers, parents, community support and students willing to work hard to achieve a common goal.”

Simpkins said he was grateful to be able to provide Winter Winds for the students. The county’s three school superintendents also praised the students for their success.
