The Montgomery County United Band & Guard finished its competitive season Aug. 6 at the Indiana State Fair Band Day.

Previously, the band finished in the “Sweet 16” all three times, finishing 14th in 2017, 15th in 2018 and 16th in 2019, respectively.  The 36-member group consists of students from all three county schools and is celebrating its fifth year of existence. MCU is co-directed by Andy Simpkins (NMHS), Elizabeth Newnum (SHS) and new Crawfordsville director, Jon Tebbe.

In the preliminary competition, the band had its strongest performance of the season to earn its fourth straight trip to the finals which was held the same evening. Additionally, the band earned a season high score in music while percussion finished 13th overall.

This year’s program is titled, “Dia de los Muertos” and is a musical celebration of the Latin culture. The band performed at 8:20 p.m. in the finals competition and had another strong performance, placing 12th, which is the highest the group has ever finished at the state fair.

“This season has been one of hard work, determination and perseverance,” Simpkins said. “These students have really stepped up their game to set the bar high.”

Tebbe added, “This is a young group of students who have worked hard to set a high standard of excellence. I’m excited to be a part of this group and see where we can go.”

The band is scheduled to perform at Southmont’s football game Aug. 20; at the North Montgomery football game Sept. 3; and at Crawfordsville’s football game Sept. 10.

“We’re excited to show our community our performance,” Newnum said. “This is our way to thank the community for their support.”
