MCMURRY: Did someone say sports?

Posted

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has a plan to save summer for Hoosiers.

That was my tweet last Friday after Holcomb announced a five-stage plan to reopen Indiana amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the weeks wear on, it seems as if there is a hard dividing line between people’s opinion on the current health crisis.

There’s those that think we should go completely back to normal, and there’s those who are terrified to leave their house except to go to the store.

Let me be perfectly clear. Every life matters, and each life lost is one too many.

The answer to me is pretty simple, and it’s right along the dividing line, and Holcomb was able to almost literally take the words out of my mouth.

It’s time to press on, but with caution.

I stand with Holcomb on his plan to reopen, because I know my life and career depends on it.

We are at the eight week mark of life without sports.

Holcomb has a plan to get Hoosiers on the baseball diamond this summer. To get high school fall athletes back on the practice fields by July 1.

I know nobody cares about my opinion, but I’m going to give it anyways.

It’s time to return to some type of normalcy. Hand sanitizer, masks, smaller amounts of people in each church, restaurant, and store. I’m all for taking steps and measures to be safe. The elderly and most prone to the virus staying home if that’s what they wish, and those that want to risk it, let them risk it.

‘Normal’ will never look the same again, but I think we can start to move toward what the new normal will become.

I want our local high school athletes to have a fall season, and I want to be there covering them when they do.

Is this me being selfish? Maybe, but I don’t know many individuals that are completely selfless people.

Sports unite people. They always have and they always will, but they can’t do that when they’re not here.

Let’s be safe, and let’s be smart. And let’s thank our leaders, starting with Holcomb for doing both while keeping all six million Hoosiers’ best interest in mind.
