The Montgomery County United Winter Winds ensemble competed at the Indiana Percussion Association’s State Finals at Center Grove High School on Saturday, winning first place in the Winds Independent A class with a score of 68.70. The group is co-directed by band directors Andy Simpkins and Elizabeth Newnum.

“I am grateful that we were able to provide this opportunity for our students this season,” Simpkins said. “Many thanks to them, our parents, and the entire band staff for making this season possible. I look forward to the continued success of our band and guard into the upcoming summer marching band season.”

MCU is composed of students from Crawfordsville High School, North Montgomery High School, and Southmont High School. Established in 2017, MCU provides performing arts opportunities such as marching band, indoor percussion, winter guard, and symphonic band. This is the first season the group has competed as a winds band.

“We, as the first freshmen of MCU Band and Guard, are proud of the support from the community,” said Southmont High School senior Cole Endicott. “We put our hearts on the line every day in hopes of prolonging the life of our season, and we were successful.”
