PARKE COUNTY — A Michigan man died Saturday evening after drowning at Turkey Run State Park, according to the Parke County Sheriff’s Office.
At 7:32 p.m. deputies received a report of a possible drowning near the park’s suspension bridge. Rescue personnel recovered the body of a 57-year-old male from the water at 8:31 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Parke County Coroner.
The victim was identified as Maximo Disla-Garcia of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
According to Parke County Sheriff Jake Frazier, Disla-Garcia and his family were playing in shallow water near the suspension bridge with squirt guns when some of the toys were pulled away by the current. A child attempted to retrieve them and began having trouble in the water. Disla-Garcia went in after the child and was pulled under by the current.
Agencies assisting at the scene included Parke County deputies, Indiana Conservation officers, the Bellmore Fire Department, Marshall Fire Department, Montezuma Fire Department, Bloomingdale Fire Department and the Montezuma deputy town marshal.
